The Bloomsburg University softball team, ranked 16th in this week's national poll, swept IUP on Thursday by scores of 7-1 and 8-2.
In game one, Bloomsburg took advantage of early IUP miscues to take a 4-0 lead. IUP's Alex Daughenbaugh dropped a fly ball allowing Nikki Shiko (Kulpmont/Southern Columbia) and Danielle Lazorka (Williamsport/Jersey Shore) to score. Mandy Koch (Dauphin/Central Dauphin) and Oceanna DeBaro (Jermyn/Lakeland/Shippensburg) added RBI singles later in the inning. In the fourth, Tara Reed (Williamsport/Williamsport) hit a two-run homer to put the Huskies up for good. Reed picked up her 12th victory of the season, allowing three hits and striking out six.
In game two, the Huskies fell behind 2-0 early. The Huskies cut the IUP lead to one run in the fourth, when Mauro's RBI single scored Shiko to make the score 2-1. The Bloomsburg bats took over in the bottom of the sixth. Mauro doubled home a run, followed by back to back RBI singles from Lacy Mauro (Jersey Shore/Jersey Shore) and Lori Neyhard (Bloomsburg/Central Columbia) to take a 4-2 lead. Lazorka would drive in two more on an RBI double and Shiko added an RBI single to complete a seven-run sixth inning for the Huskies. Shavaun Fisher (Coplay/Allentown Central Catholic) picked up her 13th win of the season.
With the sweep, the Huskies improve to 28-4, 13-1 in the PSAC Central Division.
The Huskies embark on their toughest road trip of the season in the next two days, as they will travel to 10th ranked Kutztown tomorrow afternoon followed by a Saturday twin bill with third-ranked Lock Haven.
